International relations and cooperation
In recent years, Ibagué has worked towards increasing its international recognition, establishing cooperation bridges with foreign countries, cities, and governments.
Our city opens its doors to the international community, in order to create cooperation networks that can strengthen our sustainable development processes, and can foster the exchange of best practices, and successful experiences.
Sister Cities of Ibagué.
Vitoria - Gasteiz, Spain.
In 2017, both cities restored the Sister Cities’ agreement. Vitoria Gasteiz is the capital of the province of Álava and is home of the Parliament and the Government Headquarters of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country.
Vitoria – Gasteiz holds the recognition as “Very Noble and Very Royal” city. It has a population of 251,774 inhabitants and is considered as the capital of the Basque Country. The city held the title of European Green Capital in 2012.

- In cooperation with the Yapawayra Foundation and the Colombia Euskadi Association, different international cooperation projects are being carried out, such as the construction of the Youth Cultural Center in the El Limón neighborhood.
- The “Casa de la Mujer” Project was implemented. A program for the protection and care of women who have been victims of gender violence, and which provides protection and immediate attention to victims of gender violence who count with limited resources and who belong to vulnerable communities in the city of Ibagué.
- Youth Centers such as Álamos and Miramar were supported, as well as Rural Educational Institutions with donation of equipment.
- The construction of a Youth Center in La Comuna 12 is currently in process under de name of “Young creators of youth initiatives for peace and development”.
